LENScience Face to Face

LENScience Face to Face programmes are designed to provide opportunity for engagement between schools, scientists and related communities.

All programmes are designed by experienced science teachers working within scientific institutions.

LENScience Face to Face Class Day Programmes (Year 7-13)

Objective:  To provide a contextualised teaching and learning environment through which students’ understanding of concepts within the New Zealand Curriculum is developed in the context of current New Zealand scientific research.

  • Each programme is based on research with themes linking to issues relevant to the students and to New Zealand society.
  • The programmes include concept development; exploration of the nature of science and the role of science in society; hands-on practical activities relating to the specific concept and research theme; small group interaction with scientists; exploration of social and ethical issues related to relevant science and technology.
  • These programmes are linked to teacher professional development and pre and post learning activities in order to ensure that the learning continues in the school environment.

Class Modules (Year 7–13)

Objective:  To provide modules of work linking the New Zealand Curriculum to current New Zealand scientific research in order to provide New Zealand schools with resourcing that will allow classroom teaching to be linked directly to New Zealand science.

  • Each module is based on research with themes linking to issues relevant to the students and to New Zealand society.
  • The modules include concept development; exploration of the nature of science and the role of science in society; hands on practical activities that can be carried out in schools and the potential for a visit to a LENScience Classroom to experience a hands-on classroom day programme as outlined above.
  • These programmes are linked to teacher professional development in order to ensure that the learning continues in the school environment.
  • Schools can only access these programmes once they have completed face to face teacher professional development relevant to the scientific research concept.

Teacher Professional Development

Objective:  To provide opportunities for teachers to regularly update their knowledge of current scientific research in order to inform their teaching.

  • 21st century science education requires teachers to keep up to speed with current advances in science. The ability to achieve this is a recognised concern of science and in particular biology teachers nationally.
  • Professional development opportunities have been designed to support teachers in the needs that have been identified. These include hands-on workshops, seminars, symposia and support for teachers wishing to apply to be hosted on teacher fellowships within science organisations that are linked to LENScience.
  • Full modules of work will be available to those schools that participate in related professional development. This is to encourage best practice and ensure that teachers using the programmes are suitably conversant with related science.
  • Small research groups have been established with teachers wanting to explore aspects of pedagogy relevant to the teaching of advanced biotechnologies and ethics in school science programmes.
