Information for Applicants

The NRCGD-Friedlander Foundation Scholarship for Biomedical Science provides a unique opportunity for Year 13 students to further develop their understanding of biomedical research at the end of their final year of secondary school. Scholarship recipients will participate in the LENScience Bio-Med Summer Programme and receive mentoring support from the Liggins Institute and / or the NRCGD during their undergraduate study.
Up to 20 scholarships will be awarded in 2011 for students enrolling in an undergraduate science programme at any New Zealand university in 2012

The scholarships include the following components:

  • Six day intensive Bio-Med Summer Residential Programme (December 11-16, 2011) – course and accommodation fees fully paid.
  • $500 educational scholarship to be paid as a direct contribution for the student fees of the recipient in a Biological Science course at a New Zealand university in 2012.
  • Accommodation and meals for all students will be at Grafton Hall of Residence

Who can apply?

Year 13 students from decile 1-4 schools in New Zealand AND/OR Year 13 students of Māori or Pacific ancestry from any school in New Zealand 

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • New Zealand citizen or New Zealand resident
  • Aged 16 – 19 years
  • Undertaking an NCEA Level 3 or equivalent course including Biology and at least two of the following subjects:
    - English
    - Te Reo Māori
    - Chemistry
    - Physics
    - Science
    - Agriculture or Horticulture
    - Mathematics with Statistics
    - Mathematics with Calculus

Applications must be completed online by 12.00 noon on Monday 7th November, 2011. Please ensure you upload the following supporting documentation with your application:

  1. A statement of 500 words explaining why you would like to pursue a career in science and how this scholarship opportunity will help you achieve your goals.
  2. A full copy of your last (mid-year or end-of-year) school report.
  3. A copy of your “Record of Learning” from NZQA for Levels 1 and 2.
  4. A copy of your CV.
  5. The name, email address and day time phone number of a senior teacher in your school who will support your application. 

Closing Date for Applications – 12.00 noon Monday 7th November, 2011

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application via email on Monday 14th November, 2011.
