Providing opportunities for teachers to regularly update their knowledge of current scientific research in order to inform their teaching.
21st century Biology education requires teachers to keep up to speed with current advances in science. The ability to achieve this is a recognised concern of biology teachers nationally. LENScience professional development programmes are designed to support teachers in the development and delivery of high quality teaching and learning in their classrooms. All programmes are designed and presented by teachers and scientists working together. Programmes link directly to the New Zealand Curriculum and include both science and pedagogy.
The LENScience Teacher Professional Development Series 2011 will provide a range of seminars and workshops for teachers throughout the year. Each seminar or workshop is a stand-alone event, allowing teachers to tailor their participation in the programme to their personal needs. Most of the seminars will also be broadcast via LENScience Connect to enable teachers from throughout New Zealand to participate in these events. We encourage teachers to get together to participate in the PD to facilitate discussion and collaboration. There are a number of schools and universities that have offered to be regional venues for the PD. Alternatively if your school has a satellite dish and decoder or is on the National Education Network, you can participate that way. For more information see the LENScience Connect Technology Information page.
This professional development workshop will take teachers through a bacterial transformation practical, which you can carry out in your schools that models the genetic engineering of bacteria to produce insulin. This practical supports the Year 11 Context: Diabetes - An Issue for My Community. Please note change of date due to PPTA stopwork meeting on Thursday 24th.
