LENScience Alumni Programmes

LENScience offers a number of opportunities for undergraduate students wanting to develop skills in leadership, science and research.
Students who have participated in LENScience programmes at school or university can contact us to find out more about alumni programmes.

LENScience Ambassadors Programme

The  Ambassadors Programme offers you the opportunity to give back to a school community, and learn as you do so.

  • The programme is open to undergraduate science and health science students with links to LENScience.
  • Students can participate from any university in New Zealand.
  • Participants can link back to their own school, or support students from participating schools throughout New Zealand.

What does an ambassador do?

  • Participate in the LENScience online chat community at each of the 9 seminars in the Senior Biology Seminar Series.
  • Be a role model - encourage Year 13 students from schools to participate in the online chat and challenges.
  • Ambassadors may wish to connect with Year 13 students in the week following the seminar, encouraging students to answer the seminar challenge questions, and assisting the students in devloping the skills and understanding in Biology.

What is the time commitment?

  • Minimum commitment is 18 hours in a year. That is 2 hours (3:30pm - 5:30pm) for each of the 9 seminars in the programme.
  • Ambassadors in Auckland are welcome to stay after the seminar to meet the participating science teams.
  • Ambassadors may choose to connect with students from participating schools via the wiki after the seminar - however this is optional.

What does an ambassador get in return?

  • Ambassadors will be offered the opportunity to apply for LENScience-NRCGD summer studentships at the end of the year in which they take part in the programme. These are competitive scholarships offering placements over the summer with NRCGD investigators. The scholarships are only open to LENScience Alumni.
  • Learning by tutoring.  By participating in the programme you will challenge your own understanding of science - helping your learning.
